CROP MANAGEMENT GUIDE FOR HYBRID CORN

  Seed Rate

7-8 kg. Optimum plant population per acre should be 22,000-24,000 in rain-fed, and 26,000-28,000 in irrigated conditions.

Soil

Well-drained, medium clay soils are preferred, though corn can be grown on light soils. Soil pH should be 6.5 – 7.5.

Field Preparation and Transplanting     Two ploughings, one harrowing, followed by proper levelling. Ridges and furrows should be opened, in case of irrigated fields.
  Spacing         Irrigated Rainfed
Between rows   60 cm 60 cm
Between plants 30 cm 25 cm
Plant Method     Dibble one seed per hill at recommended spacing. Plant at 2/3 rd height on the slant if planting is on the ridge.
  Irrigation

Sufficient moisture should be maintained in the soil from planting to seed development. Deficiency in soil moisture leads to reduction in seed size and yield. Excess moisture leads to rotting of stem and roots.

Fertilizer     Apply 4-5 mt/acre quintals FYM or compost and mix thoroughly in soil. Apply 24:36:24 (NPK) kg/acre under normal fertility conditions as follows:
      Stage
Urea
DAP
MOP
      Planting
52 kg
34 kg
      25-30 DAS
50 kg
      45-50 DAS
34 kg
Inter Culture     Two hoeings at 20 and 40 DAS are adequate.
Weeding     Pre-emergence spray of Atrazine 50% W.P. @ 0.5 – 1.0 kg per acre for light soils or 1.0 – 1.5 kg per acre for heavy soils, mixed in 200-250 litres of water, controls dicot weeds.
Plant Protection     Spray Endosulfan 35 % @ 2.5 ml per litre of water 10 DAS. At 20-25 DAS, repeat the same spray or apply Carbofuran 3 g granules @ 3 kg per acre in the leaf whorls.
Harvesting     The crop can be harvested when the cob husk dries down and when the moisture in the grain is 20-25 %. “Black layer” formation at the embryo is indicative of seed maturity.
CAUTION     Do not use the grain harvested from hybrid seed based crops as seed for the next crop. Doing so will cause a drastic reduction in crop yields due to segregation and loss of hybrid vigor.
